MISCELLANEOUS
#EnjoyRespectVenezia is the City of Venice’s awareness campaign designed to direct visitors towards the adoption of responsible and respectful behaviour towards the environment, landscape, artistic beauties and identity of Venice and its inhabitants. The objective is to raise awareness of tourist impact, with the belief that responsible travelling can contribute to sustainable development. Further information is available on the City of Venice’s website.
Take a moment to review the following information to learn more about the forbidden behaviors and regulations applied in the city. The violation of such regulations involves the application of administrative fines from €25 to €500.
We are aware that high tide is the phenomenon which gets visitors the most curious and worried at the same time since they are not used to it. Hence, let’s try to know this phenomenon better!
You should know that high tide is a foreseeable, natural, short event which happens because of the occurrance and combination of specific natural factors: low atmospheric pressure, full or new moon and strong wind blowing up the narrow, shallow Adriatic Sea, which forces water into the Venetian Lagoon. It is important to underline that this phenomenon does not happen suddenly: water takes six hours to reach the peak and, once achieved, it starts to recede and gradually return to normal.
When high tide occurs, some areas of the city get flooded for a few hours causing inconvenience for pedestrians and sometimes forcing water buses to change their routes to avoid passing under low bridges. Consider that the actual depth of water in the streets is far less than the “level of tide” might suggest. In fact, tidal maximum is compared to the reference level usually called mean sea level. It means, for example, that 135 cm of forseen flooding (very intense level and infrequently reached) translate into 40 cm of water in the Piazza San Marco which is the lowest part of the town.
If high tide is forecasted, a warning siren is sounded meaning that an unusually high tide will peak in three to four hours. Musical tones indicate the level of tide expected: intense, very intense and exceptionally high tide. The city provides elevated wooden walkways in some areas of the city. When streets are flooded, it is strongly recommended not to walk barefoot. To protect your feet wear wellingtons, plastic garbage bags or disposable rain boots which can be purchased from souvenir stands and street vendors.
Unfortunately, yes. Since the city is located in a lagoon, mosquitoes are present in particular in summer because of the warm temperatures. If you are prone to bites and are visiting in summer, take some insect repellent or a repelling device with you, or buy them in a local supermarket/pharmacy.
We do not exchange foreign currency at our hotel. However, an ATM can be found right next to the hotel and a bank with an ATM where you can withdraw Euros at any time is just a few steps away.
Yes, it is! Complimentary Wi-Fi connection is available throughout the hotel.
