The Republic of Venice was one of the world’s leading industries in bookmaking. Not for nothing, dozens of bookbinding studios had been documented in Venice by the 1450s, and bookmakers enjoyed esteemed social status. Venice’s success shouldn’t come as a surprise: firstly, Venetians were already skilled at working with leather and other materials used in this activity; secondly, the city’s location as the gateway to the East had easily allowed Venetians to learn the techniques of papermaking.
